I'm posting this retroactively to share the procedure for making this lovely dress that I completed in January as part of my Upcycle Disney Villain Challenge for this year.
The first step in any sewing project is to measure yourself and cut the tissue but since I had already sewn this one twice before I was able to skip this step.
Next is laying out the fabric (usually according to the fabric layout in the pattern instructions but not always - especially when trying to get the best use out of a solid color fabric. I have cut out my pieces from some leftover Halloween fabric.
Next I used regular school chalk to draw on the outline of where I wanted my stripes to be and then using Tulip Soft Matte Fabric Paint I outlined and then filled in my stripes.
I moved onto outlining the stripes on the back of my bodice lining up my seams to the front so the stripes would appear continuous.
Then I outlined the stripes for my bottom front and chalked in where my darts go to ensure that the stripes wouldn't interfere with my darts and then like with the front I painted it in and then lined it up with back and chalked and painted the back again being aware of the dart placement.
Next I cut some long black strips from my scrap bin to make my piping. I took some leftover parachute cord from my general crafting bin and placed the cord into the fold of my strip and using a zipper foot stitched a line just outside the cord to hold it in place.
Then I attached the piping to one side of my seam and then joined it with the front and repeated on the other side to complete stitching the bodice and then attached the facing to the inside
And then last but not least, I attached the skirt to the bodice and added the zipper.
Note, I learned a valuable lesson with this project and had to recut my facing pieces because you should have white facings against white fabric if you don't want to be able to see the facing. I redid my in some tan I had in my scrap bin.
How do you think I did compared to the sketch I drew? Comment below to tell me if you love it or hate it and how and where you'd wear it!
